The "Mitzvah Tank"
In 1951 (5711), as world Jewry struggled to recover from the devastation wrought by the Holocaust, the Lubavitcher Rebbe spearheaded an outreach campaign, providing encouragement, guidance and meaning to those so desperately in need of direction.
This campaign received a vigorous boost with the innovation of the "Mitzvah Mobile," which soon became known as the "Mitzvah Tank." Fueled by the optimism and inspiration of the Rebbe and the energy and dedication of his followers, the Mitzvah Tanks took to the streets, leading the battle against such assaults on Jewish life as assimilation, addiction, despair and indifference, thus cultivating a sense of purpose. The volunteers who manned these roving islands of hope shared their knowledge of Judaism and began assisting individuals and strengthening communities, filling a painful spiritual void.
In the ensuing years, the Mitzvah Mobiles became a common and familiar sight to everyone in New York City and other large cities and were warmly welcomed on its busy streets. Today thousands of Jews regularly anticipate and enjoy their arrival. The spirited volunteers serve as a source of inspiration to passers-bye, bringing them the joys of Judaism and providing a mitzvah on the spot for people on the go.
Rabbi Shalom Meir Holzkenner has just announced that he has purchased his own "Mitzvah Tank" which will soon be seen on the streets of Las Olas and surrounding areas!
